High Energy Vs High Power BESS

One of the first things our engineers consider when designing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for a customer is the amount of energy you need to deliver to load and over what time period it needs to be delivered.

Ask yourself: will you be needing a lot of power to be delivered very quickly?  Will you need a more sustained amount of power over a longer period of time? That helps us choose whether to design a high energy or a high power BESS.

When we determine which kind of BESS you need, our engineers calculate the perfect ratio of inverters to batteries for your system. High power systems have a high inverter to battery ratio to allow for a rapid discharge of power. A lower inverter to battery ratio is required for a high energy BESS.

Applications for a High Power BESS

A high power BESS is best if you need a lot of power over a short time. High power BESS are typically used for:

  • Frequency regulation and grid stability
  • Voltage regulation
  • Allowing for a spinning reserve
  • Peak shaving
  • To enable black start capacity

Applications for a High Energy BESS

High energy BESS are installed if you need sustained power for one hour or more. High power BESS are typically used for:

  • Residential and small commercial power needs
  • Integration of renewables
  • Load levelling

The beauty of a great BESS is that no matter what happens, if it’s been engineered right, you’ll have all the power you need available when and how you need it. Talk to the team at Century Yuasa if you would like to know more about high energy and high power BESS and which is best for your needs.
